Sponsor a Copper Tail Farm goat!

We are excited to announce that we have expanded our Sponsor a Goat Program! You can now sponsor a baby, teenage, milking or retired goat! Prices range depending on who you sponsor, and each sponsorship comes with benefits! You can find additional information about goat sponsorship opportunities below.

We have had several customers ask us about sponsoring a goat. We have had several customers ask us about sponsoring a goat. There are several reasons why this may interest you!  Maybe you always wanted to own a goat, but the time was never right, or it just didn't work out for you. Or you are unable to have your own barn and fencing where you live, but would still like to be connected to goats in some way.  Perhaps  you love our farm and find sponsoring a goat as a fun way to support us.  Maybe you really value the fact that we are an Animal Welfare Approved goat dairy, and you would like to contribute to the costs associated with making goat health and happiness priorities of our business. Whatever the reason, we are glad you're interested!

We started the Program in 2020, and began with retired goats. For a myriad of reasons, we have had to retire a few goats well before a typical goat retirement age. Most dairies would cull (put down, or sell for meat)  these goats if they were not contributing financially to the farm. We don't feel right doing this, especially with girls who have worked hard here for us throughout their lives. We feel that we owe it to these girls to let them retire here, among their daughters, sisters, and mothers.

We calculated how much it costs us to keep these retired goats, and to not cull them. We took our total goat related costs from 2019 and divided them by the number of goats we had. On average, costs for one non-milking goat include: $315 hay, $25 minerals and medicine, $10 vet bills, $30 shavings, $40 miscellaneous items (hoof trimmers, Livestock Guardian Dog costs, shelter repairs, etc.), with a grand total of $420 per year, or $35 per month.

In 2021, we decided to expand our Sponsor a Goat Program. We are excited to offer 4 different Sponsorship Opportunities:

$400/year: Sponsor a Retired Goat ($34/month)

$300/year: Sponsor a Milker ($26/month)

$200/year: Sponsor a Teenager ($17/month)

$100/3 months: Sponsor a Baby Goat ($34/month)

$400/year: Sponsor a Retired Goat ($34/month)

These goats no longer produce for our farm, and get to live out the rest of their days with the herd they love, surrounded by their family members. This level of sponsorship also includes girls that are taking a year off for health reasons.

$300/year: Sponsor a Milker ($26/month)

These goats are actively producing for our farm. The money from sponsorship for these ladies goes to cover the costs of dam raising. Most goat dairies take the babies away from their mamas right when they are born. The babies are then bottle fed (sometimes not even with goat milk), so the farmer can keep all of the milk from the mama. We let our babies stay with their mamas- they stay together forever if we keep the babies, and until they are weaned if we sell the babies. This means less milk for us farmers, but we believe it is better for the health and happiness of both mamas and babies.

$200/year: Sponsor a Teenager ($17/month)

These goats are between 1-3 years old. In most goat dairies,  babies are born in the spring and bred in the fall, often before their bodies are ready. We never breed our goats this young. We wait until the following fall to breed, when the goats are 1.5 years old. Sometimes, we even wait an additional year, when the goats are 2.5 years old. We consider body condition and weight when we make these decisions. That means we often have to raise a goat for a long time before it starts contributing financially to the farm.

$100/3 months: Sponsor a Baby Goat

These are the baby goats! We keep all goats born on the farm for about 3 months. At that point they are either sold to loving homes, or retained here on the farm.  You can sponsor a baby goat before they leave our farm. If we happen to keep them, you can choose to upgrade your sponsorship to the Teenager level. You are welcome to name the baby goat as part of the sponsorship.

Petunia is SPONSORED for a full year (until July 2021) by Margaret Loeffler. Thank you so much, Margaret! ♡♡♡ In 2020, we retired Petunia, who had a horrible kidding. We did not think she was going to survive, and miraculously, she did! She cannot be bred again. Sadly, we lost her mother, Poppy, last year. She had a tumor behind her eye. Petunia has never had a daughter that we could keep :( That's why she needs to stay with her herd, more than ever.

Petunia

Pois Chiche is SPONSORED for a full year (until July 2021) by Darcy Baggett. Thank you so much, Darcy! ♡♡♡ In 2019, we retired Pois Chiche. Pois Chiche is the first goat Christelle fell in love with, when Jon & Christelle were farm hands on a farm in Oregon. When we moved to the farm, Pois Chiche was just a few weeks old, and she was isolated from the other goats because she had a very badly broken leg. Christelle spent a lot of time bonding with her, and couldn't bear to leave her behind when we moved to Maine. We bred Pois Chiche for a few years, but it was apparent that her leg was really bothering her, especially when she was pregnant. She's a great milker and an awesome goat. She had a daughter last year (Caramel), and Pois Chiche will retire here and spend her time with Caramel, and her best friend Sawyer.

Pois Chiche

Violet is SPONSORED for a full year (until July 2021) by Deb Lipscomb. Thank you so much, Deb! ♡♡♡ In 2020, we also retired Violet. Violet is an Alpine/Nubian mix who has a horrible udder. She was ok to milk the first few years, but she's been almost impossible to milk the past 2 years. Jon milks 40 goats by hand, twice a day- he has incredibly strong hands, and even HE has a hard time getting milk to come out of her udder! She was one of the first goats that we brought with us from Oregon in 2014. I cannot sell her- she will retire here. Violet is so sweet- she loves rubbing her head on you like crazy. She has a daughter, Farah, that she spends her time with.

Violet

Sawyer is SPONSORED for a full year (until July 2021) by Margaret Rhinelander! Thank you so much, Margaret! ♡♡♡ Last but not least, we have Sawyer. Sawyer is not a retired mama at all, but a wether! Christelle fell in love with him in Oregon, when his mama rejected him and Christelle had to bottle feed him. He is humongous, and we call him Uncle Sawyer because the babies love to play on his back and hang out with him. Sawyer and Pois Chiche are best friends. He's a big teddy bear, and we have more photos of him than any other goat in the herd!

Sawyer

Lightning is SPONSORED for a full year (until July 2021) by Chris Lawrence. Thank you so much, Chris! ♡♡♡ In 2017, we retired Lightning. Lightning is Jon's special goat. She had the worst kidding we have experienced to date. She had a surviving daughter, Zola, and they are inseparable. Lightning is gorgeous, and probably the most beautiful goat in our herd. She loves to be pet and is super sweet. She has 2 daughters here, Ezzie and Zola.

Lightning

Daisy is SPONSORED for a full year (until September 2021) by Barbara Futter! Thank you so much, Barbara! ♡♡♡ Daisy is a little less vocal than Gypsum, but she's just as sweet. She LOVES curling up in your lap. Whenever I hang out with the goats, she comes right on over, jumps on my lap, and will sometimes even fall asleep. She's a gem.

Daisy

Gypsum is SPONSORED for a full year (until September 2021) by Jeanne Marshall! Thank you so much, Jeanne! ♡♡♡ In 2018, we lost one of our favorite goats, Gypsy, during Kidding Season. It is the only mama we have lost during a birth, and we were heartbroken. She had 2 girls during that delivery- Gypsum and Daisy. They should be bred this year (2020), but unfortunately they are too small. We're not sure if they will ever be big enough to breed, but cannot get rid of them because they are Gypsy's last gift to us. We have therefore decided to offer them up for Sponsoring (since there was so much interest, thank you!!).Gypsum has gorgeous blue eyes, just like her mom. She is SO LOUD. She LOVES attention, and will follow you around like a puppy. She is sweet as can be, and is often a favorite of anyone who comes to visit!

Gypsum

Blue is SPONSORED for a full year (until December 2021) by Katia Zolotareva. Thank you so much, Katia! <3 In 2018, we lost one of our favorite goats, Gypsy, during Kidding Season. It is the only mama we have lost during a birth, and we were heartbroken. In 2017, Gypsy had quads- all boys except for teeny tiny little Blue. She may not ever be big enough to breed, but she’s a spitting image of her mother, and so she will stay here at the farm with us. She is basically a lap goat and loves attention.

Blue

Clover is SPONSORED for a full year (until December 2021) by Jim and Emmy Trask-Eaton. Thank you so much! Clover was one of our first goats, and came with us from Oregon as a baby. She has had many gorgeous girls, and we’ve kept several of them (Lily, Ruby, and Basil). Her udder is starting to show her age, and this will be the last year is is bred. Clover has always been a hearty, reliable, sweet goat. She will enjoy being retired here surrounded by her daughters and granddaughters.
